Session 8
Aftermath
Section titled “Aftermath”As a crowd formed in the centre of the town; The Fated Eight stood sombrely around the corpse of their fallen friend. They pleaded with Cynthia; who was inspecting Lady’s corpse, to help them bring her back. The female mage could only offer her condolences - explaining that she had died too quickly for any revival magic to work.
As Civil Corps began to take control of the area - Cynthia offered them a place to stay at a small apartment she owned in the far North of the Fortune Markets.
Regrouping At Cynthia’s
Section titled “Regrouping At Cynthia’s”The Fated Eight arrived at Cynthia’s and took a few moments to gather their thoughts and feelings before discussing the events that had just transpired. Cynthia sent word to the Roan Chapel requesting Graxious and SHAI be relieved of their watch for this important news - and the two arrived a short while later.
Various questions and theories about the true identity of Lady’s Assailant were floated before Axton admitted that he knew who “Moretti - the man that Lady’s Assailant had spoken of - was. He asked Cynthia Glint to give them some privacy before divulging further and she acquiesced but not before sharing some information with the party.
“I know this isn’t great timing for you lot but this is a matter of public safety and will be treated seriously.
I’ve alerted the Civil Corps’ Investigative branch that the 4 of you were present but not involved with the murder by my own eye. They will call you in for questioning but you are not suspects in this matter - they are merely grasping for information to aid themselves in solving this murder.
Please give them whatever you can to aid them.”
- Cynthia’s parting words to the party.
Axton shared with the rest of The Fated Eight that he had worked with a man named Vito Moretti in his hometown a while back. The Tiefling male detailed Vito Moretti as a dangerous man and a criminal.
“Anyone who goes up against Vito Moretti ends up squashed… or worse.”
- Axton’s description of Vito Moretti
When prompted about the option of speaking with Vito Moretti, Axton admitted that it wouldn’t be a good idea as he was on the run for killing Vito Moretti’s son, Marco Moretti.
Who Can We Trust?
Section titled “Who Can We Trust?”The Fated Eight spent this moment alone wondering who else in this city; or beyond, they could trust - with many of the party members unsure if it would be wise to trust anyone else again after such a betrayal. They questioned Cynthia - unsure of her motives in this situation - but Morgyn admitted to recognizing her from their time in Zenytha and stated she could be trusted up to a point. The party came to an agreement not to give away too much information to anyone else - only to be interrupted by a knock at the door.
A Knock At The Door
Section titled “A Knock At The Door”Two Civil Corps members stood outside the door and requested that The Fated Eight make their way to the Tower of Inquisition to provide information about the earlier incident. The party decided to avoid trouble and agreed to the request. Whilst being escorted to the tower, Aurevald spoke with Scabb; who he’d re-summoned to the Material Plane earlier, before noticing that the Imp was struggling to speak clearly.
The party noticed Scabb struggling with forming sensical words at all. They noticed a glowing mark in the shape of a three-finger grasp around his neck. Aurevald had a sense this was a curse mark of some sort left behind by Lady’s Assailant. Scabb was urged to resist speaking and to rest until they could see Cynthia.
Interrogation
Section titled “Interrogation”The Fated Eight arrived at the Tower of Inquisition - a foreboding twenty floor building home to the Investigative branch of the Civil Corps - where they were met by Cynthia Glint. She explained what she had already told the investigators and that SHAI and Graxious were not present at the incident - she also advised Graxious that he was requested to return to the Roan Chapel for a brief moment. Aurevald also asked that Cynthia take a look at Scabb’s affliction, to which the mage agreed to do so - instructing the party to meet her back at The Witch’s Wardrobe when they were finished.
Cynthia, once again, advised the party that they were not in trouble and requested that they provide any information know to them to help the city in it’s investigation. A man from above requested The Fated Eight follow him to an upstairs room and closed the door. He introduced himself as Commander Dae’hya - leader of the Storm Corps.
“One of my soldiers tell me you protected a Whitecloak from harm - for that, you have my gratitude.
I also heard that you lost one of your troupe shortly following that - a rouge assassin with an eyepatch if my intel is correct - for that, you have my sympathies.
Should you seek revenge - I have an associate who might be able to help you with information that could be of use.”
- Dae’hya introducing himself to the party.
Commander Dae’hya offered The Fated Eight an introduction to a contact of his who could aid their own investigation into Lady’s Assailant. All he asked for in return was that they provide the Civil Corps the same amount/level of information that they would expect from this contact.
He left the room shortly after and another man; an older Human male and dressed in the Civil Corps attire, stepped in and requested that the party follow him downstairs. Sconces on the wall alit as they descended below the ground what seemed an endless number of floors before they arrived at a freezing cold room with a large iron door on it. The man opened the door and they were gestured inside and towards a drawer in the back.
The man opened the body to reveal the corpse of Lady Snowblood - perfectly preserved by the magic chilling this room.
Meeting In The Morgue
Section titled “Meeting In The Morgue”The man introduced himself as Governor Isaac Finsk - brother of Roan’s High Governor Hellum Finsk - and the man in charge of the investigation of Lady Snowblood’s assassination. The Fated Eight were initially distrusting of him but over time he endeared them and they began to share information about Lady’s history and possible avenues for Thomas Urgide’s true identity.
The Missing Bracers
Section titled “The Missing Bracers”After inspecting Lady’s body - the party noticed that the bracers she’d found a few days earlier were missing. They did remember seeing them on her body after she’d died so they deduced someone must’ve taken them in the transport of her body.
Isaac Finsk agreed to investigate the people who had handled her body and see if anyone with the Civil Corps had been compromised. The Fated Eight thanked Isaac and made their way back up to the ground to regroup with Cynthia.
Returning To Cynthia
Section titled “Returning To Cynthia”Arriving at Cynthia Glint’s shop - The Witch’s Wardrobe - in the early evening, the party were greeted by the female mage, who advised them she’d sent Scabb to the Roan Chapel after determining his affliction was a similar curse as that which affected the Amnesic Halfing Woman from a a week prior. She believed it would be a tricky curse to dispel - especially the longer it progressed on the afflicted being.
Cynthia also agreed that they should continue their own investigation into Lady’s Assailant and offered her secondary residence to The Fated Eight for the next few nights as a place to get some rest. The party thanked her and left for The Rowdy Roan to speak with the waitress who’d recognized Thomas Urgide earlier in the day.
The Rowdy Roan was packed at this time of day; with many of the working class clamouring here after finishing their jobs for the day, but The Fated Eight managed to find a table within a reasonable timeframe. The same waitress that had served them earlier in the day arrived at their table with recognition.
“I’m sorry - it’s still far too busy for you to speak with Boss right now - you’ll have to come back in a few more hours if you want to talk to him.
If you’re here for a drink - what can I get you?”
- The Waitress’ words to the party
She was a tad confused when The Eight probed her for information about Thomas - with her even stating that she didn’t know anyone by that name.
As the party questioned the waitress more - she began to recall some of the physical traits of the man they described and even serving him beverages, but seemed more confused how she’d forgotten the events the longer the conversation carried on.
The party decided they’d gotten the information they could from the woman and headed to Storm Corps HQ to meet with Commander Dae’hya and update him on the situation.
The Storm Corps HQ was quite busy - even at this late hour - and the party were quickly taken to see Commander Dae’hya upon requesting an audience with him. He thanked them for sharing the information that they had with Governor Isaac Finsk and was puzzled by the waitress’ spotty memory about Lady’s Assailant.
The session closed with Commander Dae’hya offering to introduce them to the owner of The Steel Fist Tavern; and a man that Dae’hya himself respected highly - Garhys Steele.
